Re: Car falls from Chesapeake Bay Bridge

4 or 5 years ago, the same eastbound span was open to two way traffic. A car crossed the centerline hit a tractor trailer going the opposite way. The trucker's steering wheels were damaged, he lost control went through the Jersey barrier after hitting it nearly head on. He was killed in the crash after the truck plunged to the bay. The other other driver, injured was drunk and awaiting trail on a previous DUI. A mini controversy ensued when bridge engineers had no good explanation as to why trucks were allowed on the bridge if the Jersey Barriers weren't strong enough to keep them from going over in a crash. Had the barrier done it's job the trucker likely would have survived. I don't know the outcome, whether the barrier system was beefed up or whether they just washed their hands of it.

I too love riding over the western span on my motorcycle. The open guard rail is pretty cool!!!
