If you're laptop is connected to the GPS, there is no reason you couldn't use the NOAA charts instead of the Navionics.

It would help if you said what kind of computer you are on... MacENC is a good program for Macs... Fugawi has a pretty good package for Wintel machines. Neither is free IIRC, but you do get what you pay for... as the two packages I've mentioned probably are considerably more user-friendly than what you've down loaded.

SeaClear is a free program that is supposed to be fairly decent for Wintel machines.
