Re: Want to buy a used 40-50 live aboard Sail
On one hand, and to a certain point newer is better. At 20 years problems are cropping up all over the place. Deck fittings need re-set @ every 10 years...
Point is, at that point older isn't worse. I have a Bermuda 40 with a fathometer. Good to 400' depth! It'll work another 40 years. Newer electronics are not built to last...ie an I phone battery life is 18 months...So yeah, a newish boat won't blow up in your face but a 20 year old boat can. On the other hand, a 30-40 year old boat with simple systems and in good shape could well be a wiser investment. Many newer boats are all plastic...my 1981 Tartan 37 is a good example. Has a Cetec Benmar auto pilot. You should see it. Huge gears and chain. Very durable unit. Newer ones have plastic housings. I have a friend with an Oday 323...plastic scupper fittings...nuff said...
My Tartan 37 is for sale BTW...$55,000 for a great boat.
