As I look at my Beetle sailor transom assembly, I notice that it looks exactly like an external sail track. Why not just use a gooseneck slide attached to the rudder? This would allow the rudder to pivot and would also allow the rudder to move upward if it strikes bottom; preventing damage. I don't know if this was the original design, but it seems like a good solution. My bronze track is 3/4", I haven't found a gooseneck slide that size yet, but I could always change out the track to fit the available slide.
