As I said, if you just need it to have it tail the line, they'll do fine...provided you're using a line that is the right size for the wincher... using a line that is too small or too large... even if the winch can handle it... is going to cause problems.

Also, I've been told, but haven't experienced it myself, that some of the newer, high-tech lines don't work so well with them. YMMV.

The self-tailing devices on winches have complicated spring-loaded jaws and are generally a bit more flexible about what size line they can handle.
