Wood Boats (maintenance & performance)

Hi all,

I'm investigating two daysailers for next season. Trying to do my homework so I can get a decent price during the off season.

Saw a Bluenose 23 that looks gorgeous, it was renovated in 2008 ... and if the pics are recent, has held up well. I'm also looking at Pearson Ensigns, which have about 1,000 lbs more in displacement and a larger cockpit. But the Bluenose oozes beauty and is a real head/heart turner.

For the Bluenose my questions are:
  • maintenance - as a wood boat will it require a lot of time & $'s to maintain?
  • with a somewhat light displacement of about 2,000 lbs will it be too tender for my wife?
  • at 6' will boom clearance be sufficient for me so I don't have to continually duck the boom?
  • Can I use a small spinnaker if desired?

Probably hard to go wrong with either choice.

Appreciate your thoughts.
