We keep vodka and sherry in plastic containers in the fridge but table wine we stick with glass. When heading out we store wine in a drawer or in the bilges encased in towels or a sock. We buy cheap synthetic walking socks from a camping store and thus far have not have any breakages even during some pretty wild weather off the NSW coast. Don't use glass when actually sailing, suffered a few (less than five) breakages of wine glasses over the years but usualy broken stem rather than completely smashed.

Personally I think the no glass thing is an overeaction.
