I don't know...but, wax rings seem to work pretty well sealing toilets. I carry a couple because it's the type of wax that when it's warm it can be worked into cracks in metal thru-hulls or welds that have given way and then it can be backed up with tape or other materials. The wax helps reduce the size of the opening...it's not for gluing things together.

As for Icarus...his problem was that he failed to heed his father's advice and flew too close to the sun, the wax melted, and, well, as they say the rest is history. BTW, Icarus' father built the wings...two sets in fact and then the father flew to safety on his wings by staying away from the sun. I don't think the critique of Icarus is one for illustration of faulty engineering, but rather the hubris of a dumb dude that didn't listen to the good advice of his father.
