I sailed the Hawaiian Islands for 2.5 years and was never "scared". We anchored on every island from Kauai to Hawaii multiple times w/o any problems;I don't remember ever dragging, anywhere.
The channels can be challenging, but in no way dangerous, unlike a norther in the Gulfstream.
Indeed, the return to the west coast is a difficult sail, but if one follows the recommended route for the time of the year of the sail, and not cutting through the Pacific high, certainly much safer than a bad crossing from Newport to Bermuda.
The cakewalk from California to Hawaii is such a pleasant voyage; it's definitely worth the return trip, IMO.
