Re: Things lost in the water

I have been sailing off and on for about 35 years now, but have never flown a spinnaker of any kind. I have a nice Asym that came with my boat but had never used it, so my 12 yr old son and I set out to try it.

After a moderate knockdown that made my son nervous, I loosened the main sheet, handed him the tiller and halyard, and went forward to pull down the sail. Of course the sail dipped into the water and in the struggle to pull it back in without tearing it I kicked the ATN Tacker into the water. It seemed to sink very slowly as I ran back to attempt to grab it with the hook, but it was just barely out of reach (and there is no way I would jump into 50* water after it, and leave my son to figure out how to turn back for me).

That won't be the last thing I lose overboard, but it was a $100 lesson well learned. Now I realize I can just leave it attached to the forestay below the furler drum, stuff the spinn back into the bag, and remove it back at the dock.
