Well, it also depends on the type of sail... For instance, if you have a mylar or loadpath sail, you won't likely be sewing it (maybe, but not likely)... tape is common as is adhesive.
Also a combination of structural tape (mylar or loadpath swatches) with adhesive is a COMMON way to repair loadpath sails.
Sewing dacron is common enough, is tape. I can honestly say I've done all of the above, sew, tape, and glue, and when it was hopeless to fix, I've replaced.
