Parrots are also very temperature sensitive. Some more so than others. I have a Quaker and they can take fairly cold weather, but many cannot take below 70 or so. I think a Quaker would be a good choice for a father, as they do not live as long (about 15 years) as many of the larger birds, yet can still learn to talk, and love to be with people. Quakers are happy well down into the 50 degree mark. There are even colonies of escaped pets living in Chicago. The only drawback of the Quaker is that they are noisy.
