I think your idea to apprentice is a good one. There is an advantage to learning from an experienced if not expert hand rather than the DIY trial and error method.

I did this years ago with an auto mechanic. Started out handing him tools and grew to become a p/t employee. Along the way I earned his discount on parts and time in his bays on slow days to work on my car. Those were college days. He was a good teacher and I learned much.

But I also agree that this forum gives us access to tons of expert opinion and the SN community has been a huge help to me with first real boat... Either way you cannot lose.
