Self-Tacking Jibs

Ok, so what''s the deal with self-tacking jibs, in regards to performance. I''ve seen quite a few new boats with these set-ups lately. I''ll buy into the fact that they''re easier to deal with shorthanded when beating upwind, but it seems like the sail will necessarily have to be smaller, and that reaching will suffer. Anybody have any experience with self-tacking jibs? Do you ever use a full size jib or genoa instead? I''m obviously not talking about cutters with the staysail set up as self tacking, but boats where the only headsail is.
