Standing Rigging Question

I have a 36' Cascade and am working (slowly) towards getting it shipshape. The boat had been abandoned for quite some time and requires serious repairs. While I was doing a pre-mast-tuning inspection I noticed that the support for the deck-step has a very small crack and needs to be replaced. The support is basically a 2 x 6 and I need to know what type of wood is an acceptable replacement. Obviously this support will be under extreme loads. I am planning to replace the wooden spreaders as well. What are the best types of wood to use for these? Is there a particular grade that I should look for?
