An open 24 ft boat could survive every single storm it encountered for a year? It would be interesting to see the presumed path and timeline overlay all hurricanes and tropic storms for the time period. Would it have been natural for nothing but current to move our castaway south of their path?

I do not think you could keep a 24ft open boat afloat through one. Much better boats have lost that battle, with well fed crews and modern equip.
