removing black marks

Last fall when I was moving my Cape Dory 26 from the marina to "the hard" I ran her up onto the dock and left a large black mark on the bow. I would really like to get this mark off the boat as it is not very attractive and reminds me of an episode I''d rather forget! Trouble is, I''ve tried various things to remove the mark and none seem to work. The mark is mainly from the rubber that is used to cushion against the dock. I''ve tried various soaps, etc., including one from West Marine called "Black Mark Remover" which is supposed to do just what I want, but nothing has worked. I can remove bits of it by using my fingernail to scrape it off, though using a paint scraper has not worked. I posted this on the Cape Dory Website and one suggestion I received was to use acetone. Does anyone out there have other suggestions, or comments on the acetone? The gelcoat on the boat is in good condition and I don''t want to do anything that will damage it. If I was sure it would not damage the gelcoat I would even try sanding the spot, but am afraid of causing some damage.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
