On one of our previous boats, we had a similar problem with a small v-verth which we solved by making a main cabin berth, filling in between the two fore-and-aft settees. For that installation, I made some beams out of 1x6 fir that spanned the gap, with a sheet of plywood that laid on top of them. Simple u-shaped wooden brackets fastened to the edges of the settees provide a support into which the beams could be dropped. Since every part of this system was flat when disassembled, stowage was perhaps easier than using the tables with legs as described in the article.
