Sounds like your on the right track. SD is right about the machine, the needle shaft has to be able to go through the canvas and still pick up the bobbin tread on the other side or you'll have a boogery, frustrating mess. A grommet press, one of my favorite tools, makes punching holes and pressing grommets a "breeze" (pun intended).
You may want to try and find someone close to you that has machinery that can throw it together instead of putting money into machines and tools if this is going to be your only sewing project.
