I too hear you on the yard work thing, but it seems that this is the norm. It has taken me 3 months to get my boat moved!
As for the splice, I would recommend picking up a book like the riggers apprentice. Not only would it help you with the spice, but with sorting out other rigging problems as they come along. Helped me out a ton when I had to take down my mast without a "pro" rigger from the marina (their's retired so they had no replacement, "yeah I'll get you a crane, but I ain't touchin the mast" ).
