When we purchased MISTRESS she had had this name for almost 50 years or more. When we checked the Loydes Register we found out she was originally named HAPPY HOLIDAY, and in her first 10 or so years she had three or four other names. It is reported that under one of those names she ran booze for two brothers, but mostly she enjoyed racing. Skip and I like to keep things as traditional as possible but really did not want to go back to HAPPY HOLIDAY and felt MISTRESS was so much more appropriate. Besides, Skip likes telling people he has a good wife because she bought him a MISTRESS.
While on her fourth name, coming home from a race on the Great Lakes her gas engine blew off and removed everything aft of the house. She was originally 47 feet on deck, however, the origianl plans (Eldridge McInnis design) allowed for 50 as well, and this was what was done when she was sold, renamed MISTRESS and has been so ever since. 77 years after her original launching, she seems quite happy with her name. Christened by us with a bottle of Dom P when we launched her last year, all was traditional including the builders toast and the rum that went with it.
