I think most of them work reasonably well, and those that have a direction/bearing feature are more useful still.
However the readings obtained at deck level are likely not that of the true wind - first off it is apparent wind that registers, and the wind is usually a bit higher aloft than at sea/deck level due to some surface friction.
They also need to be aimed directly into the wind for maximum readout.
