Faster, thanks for your helpful reply--I'll try that and keep my fingers crossed. I know what a thermocoupler should look like, and also know about having to hold the knob in for awhile until it all heats up, so that should be doable.
My wife always kids me (with justification) about my inability to find anything even when it's staring me in the face--I suspect I just haven't found the thermocoupler behind the metal shield you mentioned--I'll look again, more carefully.
