, the units are exactly the same... the way you set the unit for operation is the mode/page key. The major differences between the marine mode and automotive mode are:
1) Speed displays in knots, not MPH or KPH
2) Basemap of coastal data shows up and road data disappears
3) Tide stations show up
4) Color scheme changes slighty IIRC
5) Automotive terrestrial mode will tend to try and keep the vehicle on roads, the hiking/walking/biking terrestrial mode ignores the on-road restriction for auto-guidance/navigation purposes, as does the marine mode.
The battery is fairly simple to remove, and is a rechargable LiIon cell IIRC.
