I chose low maintenance black starboard for some rails and trim about twenty years ago and it still looks new. My 1973 boat is not the most traditional design that carries a lot of brightwork, but it's well kept and far from a "ghetto" boat as posted above.



I've been liveaboard cruising since 1972 and I haven't done any brightwork since the late 1980's. I keep some nice wood below. Part of my choice is due to being at a lower latitude.
