If you can find a good used diesel and can do the work yourself, that would be a good option. Probably in the same $ ballpark as a new outboard. Outboards have their advantages and disadvantages. They can be just as reliable as inboards, and have the advantage they can easily be removed for repairs and are much easier to replace. Main disadvantage is they don't power the boat as well as an inboard, especially in waves when the boat is pitching and the prop is coming out of the water.
