Agreed, I have a Hunter 456 with no backstay and an ICOM 802. Hoisted a SS wire to the top of the mast. Keep it at least 2' from the top going aft to the davits. Works just fine.

Yes - you can hoist wire - insulated or not up the mast. Try to keep it as far as you practically can from the mast and stays and shrouds.
