He's talking about using vegetable oil to lubricate the y-valve, not the
pump. BTW, Peggy Hall really frowns upon the use of vegetable or mineral oil since it can cause the
holding tank to really stink, since it covers the surface and can reduce the aerobic (non-smelly) bacteria and encourage the anaerobic bacteria (which makes the smells).
