Columbia - rub rail/hull deck joint??
I am currently in the process of prepping the hull for haul-out and a topsides awl-grip coat (wish me luck!) and am starting to examine my rub rail. The rail is located about 6 inches below the deck and I do believe that it is also the hull/deck joint. However, I don''t really know what this joint looks like. I have pulled the rubber from the extruded aluminum channel on the outside and have found lots of corroded rivets. On the inside of the boat, there is another aluminum channel running the entire length inside. However, there are no visible rivets on this side of the aluminum. Just a nice, smooth piece. So....does anyone know what this looks like? Should I be overly concerned with a reasonable (this is a 1969 boat) amount of corrosion? Or should I be driling and replacing rivets? Course, I would be drilling something that I don''t even know how its put together! I also have a hard time believing that the entire deck is held with just these few rivets.
