I've been reading these boards for a month or so now, and posting for a short while, and in that very short time I think I've seen NewBees chastised maybe four or five times for reviving ancient threads with new questions.
I absolutely agree, that is a netiquette no-no.
However, I'd like to make a comment or two and maybe a suggestion or two.
First, to the old-timers and moderators. I absolutlely understand your frustration; but a the same time you should be honored (usually). This site is so rich with experience and wisdom that it is inevitable that older threads will raise new questions and comments.
Perhaps (not to add to the over-workload of volunteer moderators) if you don't want old threads to be revived you might consider locking all threads where the oldest post is say 3 months old? That way the info would be there for NewBees to learn from, but the threads wouldn't be brought to the top.
Second, for the new folks (I know, NewBees is pejorative) search, Search, SEARCH. The Truth Is Out There !!!!!! I have found the answers to many many basic questions by searching through old threads.
If an older thread has a subject to which you wish to add, or doesn't completely answer a question you have, start a new thread and reference the old one. Such as, .... " I read elsewhere that thus and such is better than this-n-that, what is the current consensus on this question? "
Just my few thoughts on a common issue with online forums. I have to say that the fact that this is an issue only speaks to the quality of the forum.
