Had a similar issue at the railroad bridge in Manasquan NJ... the bridge is normally open, but only to a 60-70 degree angle. It's a pretty narrow channel through it (maybe 50 feet at the most), so the mast clearance next to the bascule is slim. There is usually a significant current running through it (2-4kts+) during anything other than slack current. When we went through this past may we tried calling them on 13, 16 and 9 for about half an hour asking them to go full vertical for safety. We know the guy was there since we could see him in the operator's building, but apparently he doesn't monitor the
VHF.
