Hehe! Yeah, you are probably right. I guess I'm probably a bit paranoid when I was poking around looking for trouble. There definitely is some delamination in that part, and found that when I tracked down a leak.
This is a view of the underside where you can see some pulling on the shroud. I did re-seat those this summer and the wood seemed sound, and I put a larger washer on those too.
....and this is a very rough illustration of the "thunking" rather than "pinging".
Then again, it's only going down 1/4 inch.
