No, absolutely not. Ash is the hideous cousin to white oak and is only good if you're going to remodel your kitchen cabinets and want to make them look like crap---just like they did in '67.

Don't use pine or maple either. Or birch. Equally fugly in large areas/expanses.
Try hickory, pecan, a light alder or even a light cherry. A yellow poplar even-(Tulip wood for those keeping score) for something really different. You'll have to pick those pieces at the yard, but you can tell how much darker they'll be once you clear-coat it by merely rubbing spit or water on them.
