Off-the-shelf way to get AIS from my GX2200 to Navionics on my tablet?
Just installed the Standard Horizon GX2200 VHS/GPS/AIS radio on my boat, LOVING it. I also use Navionics on my Samsung tablet, LOVING that too. Now if I could just marry the two: show AIS traffic on the Navionics charts. I'm guessing this is a real longshot, but does anyone know of a SIMPLE way to send that NMEA data from the GX2200, maybe converted to Bluetooth, into my tablet and onto the charts?
So your first task would be to determine whether there are other apps that would display it on your Samsung tablet. I believe that iNavX does, but that's iOS only - not Android. I'm not aware of any Android apps that will display AIS, but that's always changing and I haven't checked lately. There are lots of Windows programs that will display it, which is why I use a Windows8 tablet to receive and display my Bluetooth information.
It is possible to get NMEA data into an Android tablet via Bluetooth or WiFi. I've done both before to display GPS info on a hacked Nook Color that has not internal GPS. But there's no use boring you with those details since Navionics is not capable of doing what you want.
By the way, the Bluetooth system that I described in that thread has been 100% reliable for me for four years. I use it every day on my boat. First three years on a Netbook, and this year bought a tablet for better cockpit ergonomics.
Thanks Take5, great information. Bummer about Navionics not supporting this. I suppose once that tablet hits the drink (as has happened with several cell phones) I'll consider a Windows tablet and charting program that supports AIS.
Have a search around for running OpenCPN on Android, that may provide a solution (although still likely to involve considerable fudging).
