The San Juan was made out here in the Seattle area by the Clark Boat Company. It enjoyed a very big following on the west coast for many years.
Like so many of the sailboat companies, it fell on hard times and went under. The SJ 28 is a fine boat that sails very well. It was set up with hand layed glass and had very few problems. There is still a large fleet around with a good re-sale market. If the price is right and its in good condition, I would jump at a 28. It is also a boat that can be single handed very easily, and from the way you describe your wife, she well probably be a passenger rather than crew....lots of us have it that way too.
