To get it out of forward gear at the gearbox do you need to disconnect the cable? If so, you've probably got a kink in the cable somewhere, or a loose cable clamp that binds going one way.

If you don't need to disconnect the cable then the issue is more likely to be with the shifting mechanism itself.

This is not an Atomic 4 issue, per se, in all likelihood it's a Morse shifter or similar.
