While you could remove the pins and rig a multipart traveller setup on your existing track, the friction would be so high that it would be relatively difficult to use, especially when pulling to weather.

You will be much happier in the long run with a proper car and track with bearings and the proper fittings for all the controls. Howver they are rather expensive (you don't say what size boat this is on) It's easy to spend $600 to $1000 on a really good setup.
