Hi Nigel: not sure what you meant by "gears on the floor." Engine controls? If so, I have the main ignition etc panel still on the port seat front location, and the shift lever and throttle up in the binnacle. I have a Mk 1 27 (1971, #93) that a previous owner fitted with an Edson wheel, and it sure opens up the cockpit and reduces wrestling matches with the scimitar rudder. Main traveller is set on a cross brace immediately in front of the binnacle. The binnacle has also provided a handy mounting point for GPS nav. Unfortunately this wheel I understand is now about a $3000 retrofit. I guess I got lucky. One other mod you have to make is to split the backstay (nice to have anyway to control headstay tension) so you have room to stand behind the wheel.
