A shorter race to consider, held in July, is the Naptown to Solomon's race. It's the excuse to get boats to sail to Solomon's for race week down there. Shorter and also a good party once you get there.
But you have the right attitude about the Gov Cup -- have some fun and let the results take care of themselves.
My sailing buds here on the bay would get a kick out of seeing me (dedicated cruiser) write about racing.
