The crew saw the freighter... but chose not to keep an eye on it, instead going below to wake the next watch. Me... personally, I'd make damn sure that the freighter was safely gone by before leaving the deck.

If they had been hit by a Catalina... it would have been a miracle..since most Catalinas wouldn't be able to go fast enough to hit them.
