I have a "project boat," at 62-ft. ketch that was left high and dry in a yard for several years in the Caribbean, and I'm sure was not stored properly (no biocide in tanks, etc.)
When we first launched her 18 months ago, we had all sorts of
fuel problems and had to continually change contaminated
fuel filters. We couldn't find anyone to polish the
fuel, because of the location of the boat. I'm sure that after several years in the humid, hot islands, the tanks were full of algae. We have now used startron in several tank fill-ups (we have a 200 gallon diesel tank) and our
fuel problems seem to have been solved. This is certainly partly a result of running out the old dirty
fuel and changing filters, but I have a feeling the Startron has helped kill the remaining growth, and has generally helped clean the tank/fuel system.
And as for the product's claim to reduce carbon, after running through almost 600 gallons of
fuel, we haven't even had to clean any soot off the transom.
Last winter Startron was the only additive in the
fuel for winterizing in the Northeast. We didn't even top off the tank before winter storage (ran out of time & money....). Filled the tank back up in the spring, added Startron, and had no
fuel problems all season long. Never had to change a filter. Have used no other additives in the
fuel.
