Another point not mentioned is that it is prudent to hang an 8 foot 2x4 outside your bumpers. This provides a long flat surface contact with the lock wall, making it easier to stabilize the boat, and keeps the muck found on the lock walls here on the Mississippi from fouling those pretty white fenders!
