It's also generally considered good form to give "rep" to others only for their posts in sailing forums and not what they post in "Off Topic". That way, when you see somebody's rep, you've got a pretty good idea they got it by being helpful and knowledgable. Personally, I do not assign bad rep as I feel that, if I object to a post it should be on material grounds and I should publicly share the objection rather than only privately berating them. A lot of members also include their name when assigning rep, so the receiver knows with whom he is dealing.
