Simon, once or twice a year I go back to wet sailing.
LAst year I and my dear "lead head" sailed a 420 against the kids at Fred's club...
It was funny, first because we can't move like we did in the 1980's and trapeze can be tricky when you are overweight, providing some fun moments, second we were being laughed at by the kids, while we were
rigging, but once we hoisted the spi, and sailed past them lost the smirks, third, it brought excellent memories, of when we didn't care to get wet and we didn't use wet suits, just shorts and t shirts...PFD were a commodity...
We can still do it, and haven't lost it yet, but we aren't that old yet...
My only problem was the pain in the various places I had, that I didn't know I had.....specially after sailing in the 49er....that boat even made my testicules hurt....I swear its true.....
So every year, we get together and
dinghy, for the old times sake.
By the way, Fred's club there is a 68 year old man that bought a 420, and goes out every saturday alone, and sails up and down the coast, then goes home, allways alone, rain or shine, hot or cold.....I admire him.
Would I do the 470 again?? YES I would if miraculosly I was given the opportunity, (times doesn't fly back), could I do it as fast as them?? maybe not, but in my country they say:
An old horse can run faster, but an old horse knows his way around better.
