Back on thread (sort of)
Most big military equipment is nuclear powered??
oh, you mean a couple of carriers and submarines..
Certainly not most...
A nuclear reactor, as used to power a submarine (specifically a 640 class SSBN like say the USS Will Rogers on which I earned my SS designation in 1982).. is a grand total of 21 inches across, the shape and size of a typical large garbage can. I think I can say that and not give away any state secrets.
The shielding used to protect the crew is the diesel fuel tanks used to hold fuel for the back up diesel, it is somewhat less effective when the tank gets emptier and for that reason the tank is filled with water when used (they separate the fuel/water when running far better than our filters do). Petroleum fuel is a wonderful barricade for alpha, beta and gamma particles, you can tell by my bald head. Actually, as measured and reported in my medical records I got less radiation per year than a typical weekend at the beach would provide.
The other equipment used to translate the heat of the reactor (steam plant, turbines, generators, and transmission for the shaft/prop) into usable power takes up the back 1/3 of the boat. It can however power up a small city and still operate the boat. Several subs were used to provide power to the main island of Hawaii after a hurricane IIRC.
I don't quite see a reactor used on a Hummer.
