I reread your post and it seems you have cast me on the side of the Confederates! You are on the side of the Union! For what its worth, on my mother's side the family arrived in the US in 1903. On my father's side, family history is hazy but there is an old picture my grandpa found in a shoebox of his grandpa (he thinks) in the uniform of a union officer. Another ancestor was one of the founders of the Grand Army of the Republic.
I am neither proud nor ashamed of any of this. It has nothing to do with me since I strongly believe each person must and should rise or fall on their own merits and efforts. But it goes to show that you can get very far afield when trying to relate people today to what organizations did centuries ago - There just isnt much relation.
