I scrub my own bottom periodically and change my own zincs. I bought one of those T-handle allen wrenches specifically for the zincs. Easier to hold on to while wearing gloves and something to tie a lanyard on to. When I do my shaft zincs, I scrape the shaft to make sure it's clean, tighten the zinc down snug then tighten each side in increments to keep it even. After all that, I bang on it with a hammer to make sure it's really seated and then tighten it again. I'm an amateur though, so if fastbottoms does it differently, he's probably right.
