Carl-
I would recommend you pick up a copy of Dave Seidman's The Complete Sailor. It's a really good book for people interested in learning to sail and covers a wide breadth of sailing history, technique, skills in a really easy to read book with good illustrations. It's about $14 at the local bookstore.
I'd also recommend you read this
post to get the most out of sailnet. Good luck and welcome to sailnet. Be aware that you won't be able to respond to a PM until you have at least 10 posts.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
