Pearson 323 or else?

I am at the crossroads here. I am going up from 23'' to the range of 28-32. It''s either something a little smaller for the next 2-3 years (Hunter 28.5 prior to 1987 is a good example - simple, well made <no core in deck>) and prices tend to float around 15-18K.

However, the longer term plan calls for extended cruising, possibly ocean passages - nothing extreme but not daysailing in the bay. I looked at Pearson 323 and it seems like a good fairly strong boat, but the best prices start at 25K and there is much outfitting to be done. Are they good strong cruisers? Would it be wise to buy one even though the real cruising is couple of years away?

Also, any other ideas of boats in the 30 ft'' range and under 20K price that won''t fall apart in a good breeze are welcome. (No Ericssons, Endeavors and Irwins though - too much interior wood for me to feel good
