Pearson 323 or else?
I sailed a ''79 Pearson 323 summer before last on Lake Champlain. Compared to the IP 32 I learned on (ASA 101) it was a thoroughbred - fast, responsive and stable. As it was my first summer of sailing I had many "interesting" learning experiences but never had any doubts about the 323, I bought a Pearson 30 the next summer, since the 323 is now in Newfoundland. I''ve also been very happy with the 30 as a first boat. It''s like a slightly condensed 323 but I think I''d rather have a bit more room for extensive cruising.
